Description
Choline alfoscerate reaches the bench under at least half a dozen names, and the label of a 1 g unit compresses a lot of analytical information into a few lines. The glossary below unpacks each entry in the order it usually appears on a certificate of analysis. See also our laboratory reagent: L-DOPA ≥ 99%. Pure chemical substance without fill.
- Registry number
- 28319-77-9. This is the identifier to quote in orders, in the reagent register and on waste documentation; the many synonyms in circulation are not interchangeable identifiers.
- Molecular formula
- C8H20NO6P. The molecule has no strong chromophore, so quantification rarely rests on simple ultraviolet chromatography.
- Molecular weight
- 257.22. Used to convert a weighed mass into a molar concentration; recalculate if the certificate reports a salt or a hydrate.
- Systematic identity
- The glycerophosphate ester of choline, indexed as choline alfoscerate, glycerophosphocholine and L-alpha-glycerylphosphorylcholine. All refer to the same compound; only the registry number ties them together in a database search.
- Chirality
- The natural form carries the L configuration at the glycerol centre. A racemic lot is a different article and has to be ordered and documented as such, because a chiral method will resolve the two and the assay will not agree.
- Assay
- The percentage figure and, immediately after it, the method that produced it. Without the method the number cannot be compared between two suppliers.
- Water content
- Determined by Karl Fischer titration and reported as a separate line. For a polar compound of this class it is the single parameter most likely to explain a mass balance that refuses to close.
- Residual solvents
- Determined by headspace gas chromatography against the solvent list of the actual manufacturing route, not against a generic table copied from another product.
- Appearance
- Recorded at intake and again at each opening. A change from the described appearance is a documentation event, whatever the certificate says.
- Retest date
- The date after which the stated values are no longer supported by the supplier, valid only under the storage conditions written next to it.
- Container and closure
- Part of the specification, not packaging trivia: a material whose water content is a release parameter depends on the closure.
Two entries carry most of the practical weight. The first is water content, because a polar glycerophosphate weighed in an open room can gain mass while it sits on the balance, which quietly shifts every concentration calculated from that weighing. The remedy is procedural: weigh in a dry atmosphere, keep the exposure short, and treat a drifting weighing as void.
The second is the chirality line. Two lots with identical registry numbers on the invoice can still differ in configuration if one supplier ships a racemic synthetic grade, and a chiral column will show that difference immediately while a routine assay will not. Everything else is read once at intake and then archived. A chromatogram kept apart from its certificate loses the batch number that makes it evidence.
